Patrick Joseph White, 30, fired more than 180 rounds at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters in Atlanta on Friday, killing a police officer and shattering 150 windows. According to internal CDC reports cited by the Associated Press, bullets pierced “blast-resistant” glass, sending shards into multiple rooms.
The most damage occurred at Building 21, which houses CDC Director Susan Monarez’s office. Officials have not confirmed whether White died by suicide or was shot by police. He reportedly targeted the CDC over a belief that a COVID-19 vaccine had made him suicidal.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Deputy Secretary Jim O’Neill, and Monarez toured the site Monday before visiting the DeKalb County Police Department to meet the slain officer’s widow. Kennedy praised public health workers for continuing their mission “even in moments of grief and uncertainty.”
Initially, authorities suspected the nearby Emory University campus was the intended target. Cleanup and repairs at the CDC could take weeks or months.
