A Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report released Wednesday found that House Republicans cannot achieve $2 trillion in federal spending cuts without significantly reducing Medicaid funding.
Republicans aim to cut $880 billion from programs under the Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). However, CBO estimates that even eliminating all other programs under the committee’s jurisdiction would only save $135 billion, leaving Medicaid as the primary target for cuts.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and President Trump insist they are not slashing Medicaid, instead focusing on reducing fraud and expanding work requirements. However, Democrats argue the Republican plan would lead to the largest Medicaid cuts in history, with Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) stating it prioritizes tax cuts for billionaires over healthcare for low-income Americans.
The budget resolution enables Senate Republicans to bypass the filibuster and pass cuts with 51 votes under reconciliation rules.
