Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump’s domestic deployment of U.S. military forces and National Guard troops has already cost taxpayers nearly $500 million, according to a new analysis released by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. If current operations continue, the CBO estimates those costs could exceed $1 billion by the end of 2026.

The report examines troop deployments ordered during Trump’s second term in response to protests, immigration enforcement, crime concerns, and the protection of federal buildings. Active-duty forces and National Guard units were sent into multiple Democratic-led cities, including Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, Memphis, and New Orleans. Federal courts repeatedly blocked some deployments, and the Supreme Court declined to allow a military occupation of Chicago, prompting withdrawals from several states earlier this month.

Despite those withdrawals, troops remain deployed in Washington, D.C., Memphis, and New Orleans, while additional National Guard units remain on standby. The CBO estimates ongoing operations will cost roughly $93 million per month in 2026 alone. The deployment in Washington, D.C., is projected to exceed $660 million this year if it continues through December.

The CBO found that domestic military operations cost approximately $496 million in 2025, including $223 million for Washington, D.C., and $193 million for Los Angeles. Lawmakers who requested the report said details surrounding troop numbers, missions, and costs were not fully disclosed by the administration.

The White House and Department of Defense did not respond to requests for comment on the report.
