Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney led the Liberals to victory Monday, positioning himself for a broader global leadership role against President Donald Trump’s protectionist policies.
Carney, a former central bank leader in Canada and the UK, pledged during the campaign to build a coalition of nations committed to multilateralism and free trade. His election comes as Canadians increasingly reacted against Trump’s tariffs and threats to annex Canada.
Although Carney’s party secured only a minority government, analysts say his international experience gives him immediate credibility abroad.
Carney has promised to strengthen Canada’s economy by expanding trade with Europe and Asia and reducing dependence on the U.S. He also plans to boost military spending and work with the EU’s new defense fund.
While Carney is unlikely to match the influence of past European leaders, observers note he could play a key coordinating role as Canada holds the G7 presidency this year.
His win is seen as a warning to conservatives globally: reject Trump-style politics or risk electoral backlash.
