At a memorial service for activist Charlie Kirk on Sunday, conservative commentator Tucker Carlson drew criticism for remarks likening Kirk’s assassination to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Carlson said powerful figures sought to silence Kirk just as biblical leaders tried to stop Jesus, referencing “a lamp-lit room with a bunch of guys sitting around eating hummus.”

The Anti-Defamation League said Carlson’s comments echoed the antisemitic “deicide” charge — the belief that Jews were responsible for killing Jesus — which has fueled centuries of violence against Jewish communities. “Carlson’s remarks dangerously reinforced the belief that Jews killed Jesus,” the group stated.

Other critics included Mark Dubowitz of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, who called Carlson’s insinuation “antisemitic blood libels.” The activist group StopAntisemitism said his remarks “desecrated” Kirk’s funeral, while Israeli commentator Eylon Levy accused him of spreading conspiracy theories.

The controversy follows conspiracy claims online suggesting Israel was tied to Kirk’s killing, a theory Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly rejected last week. Authorities say Kirk was fatally shot by a man in his 20s who allegedly texted he had “had enough of his hate.”
