A recent Angus Reid Institute survey reveals that 64% of Canadians fear U.S. democracy may not endure another term under former President Trump. Nearly half view the U.S. as potentially evolving into an authoritarian state, coinciding with the current election season.
The poll indicates a prevailing concern among Canadians about the U.S. political landscape. A majority (62%) believe the U.S. would fare “much worse” if Trump were re-elected, while only 19% express the same concern regarding President Biden.
The integrity of the upcoming U.S. election is also in question, with 61% of Canadian respondents doubting the sufficiency of safeguards against fraud and interference. This skepticism extends to both Republican and Democrat-led states, with nearly half anticipating cheating.
Interestingly, Canadians generally perceive Biden as more favorable for U.S.-Canada relations and their economy. Sixty-four percent consider Biden a stabilizing factor for bilateral ties, and over 50% believe a Biden victory would benefit Canada’s economy more than a Trump win. Conversely, conservative Canadians tend to view Trump as economically advantageous, with 37% endorsing this view.
Conducted from January 9 to 11, the survey involved 1,510 Canadian adults and has a margin of error of ±2 percentage points.
