Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Sunday that a federal election will take place on April 28, framing the vote as a response to escalating tensions with the United States under President Donald Trump.
“I have just asked the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call a federal election,” Carney posted on X. “We need to deal with President Trump’s tariffs.”
Earlier this month, Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods, straining relations under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Carney, recently sworn in after former PM Justin Trudeau’s resignation, accused Trump of attempting to undermine Canadian sovereignty.
“President Trump claims that Canada isn’t a real country. He wants to break us so America can own us,” Carney said. “We will not let that happen.”
Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state, a notion Canadian officials have dismissed as absurd.
Carney, a former central banker with no seat in Parliament, will face Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre in the upcoming snap election.
