Laura Lee Yourex, 62, of Costa Mesa, California, has been charged with five felony counts for registering her dog to vote and casting two ballots under the pet’s name during the 2021 gubernatorial recall election and the 2022 primary.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office says Yourex submitted ballots under “Maya Jean Yourex,” her deceased dog, with one vote being counted. She self-reported the incident to election officials in October 2024 after posting photos online showing her dog with an “I Voted” sticker and a mail-in ballot.
Prosecutors allege Yourex committed perjury, forged documents, cast an ineligible ballot, and registered a non-existent voter. If convicted, she faces up to six years in state prison.
California does not require proof of identity or residence for state election voting, which allowed the 2021 ballot to be accepted. The 2022 primary ballot was ultimately rejected.
Authorities have not disclosed how she cast the ballots or whether any political party benefited from the scheme. She is due in court next week.
