Authorities in California are conducting a multi-agency manhunt after mistakenly releasing a murder suspect who was awaiting extradition to Washington state. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department identified the man as 20-year-old Isaiah Jamon Andrews, who was being held at the Martinez Detention Facility before being inadvertently freed last Wednesday.

Police said the error was discovered on Monday, prompting an immediate search. “After Sheriff’s Office staff realized Andrews had been released, we launched a search of the immediate area and confirmed that Andrews was no longer in the area,” the department said in a statement. The U.S. Marshals Service has joined the search, and local law enforcement agencies have been notified.

Andrews is accused of fatally shooting 20-year-old Theodore Wheeler in a Seattle hotel parking lot on October 19. He was arrested in California following a high-speed chase. Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes told ABC 7 that the courts, not the police, were responsible for the release error, emphasizing the need for better coordination within the criminal justice system.
