California Democrats approved $50 million in funding during a special legislative session to challenge President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed policies, including those on immigration, while wildfires continue to devastate parts of the state.
The funding includes $25 million for the California Department of Justice to file legal challenges against Trump’s policies and $25 million to support immigration groups and centers resisting deportations. “This funding agreement cements California’s readiness to serve as a bulwark against Trump’s extremist agenda,” said Democratic state Sen. Scott Wiener.
Republicans criticized the decision, with State Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher calling it a misplaced priority. “The disconnect between what Californians need and what Democrats are focused on is astounding,” Gallagher said.
Governor Gavin Newsom, who has clashed with Trump over wildfire management, has invited the president-elect to witness the wildfire destruction firsthand.
