Brazil has blocked access to Elon Musk’s social media platform X after Musk refused to appoint a local legal representative, escalating tensions with Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. De Moraes accused Musk of intending to spread disinformation, hate speech, and anti-democratic content. He ordered the block, which took effect Saturday, as part of a broader effort to safeguard Brazil’s democracy.

Musk has used X to challenge de Moraes, portraying him as a dictator and rallying support from Brazil’s right-wing, including former President Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters. Despite Musk’s initial compliance with some of the court’s demands, X recently stopped cooperating, leading to the current standoff. Brazil’s President Lula da Silva supported the block, emphasizing that wealth does not exempt individuals from following the law.

Justice Moraes’ order included penalties for using VPNs to bypass the block, although he later amended the directive to exclude restrictions on VPN apps. The situation has sparked debate over free speech and judicial power in Brazil, with many seeing the order as the most extreme in the country’s internet law history. Observers expect the block might last only a few days before Musk complies, continuing his narrative of victimization.
