Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggested that if Donald Trump had been in office, Russia may not have invaded Ukraine in 2022. In an interview with The Telegraph, Johnson emphasized the significance of Ukraine’s resistance, calling it essential for “freedom and democracy” and warned that its fall would be a “catastrophe.” He stated that Trump “understands that” and speculated that Trump wouldn’t want his legacy to be tied to the revival of the Soviet Union.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that Russia would not have invaded Ukraine if he were president, citing his relationships with both Ukrainian President Zelensky and Russian President Putin. He expressed confidence in negotiating a resolution to the conflict “very quickly” if he returns to office. Johnson, in his interview, also praised Trump’s unpredictability, noting his decisive foreign policy actions during his first term, such as expelling Russian spies and providing Javelin missiles to Ukraine.
Since Russia’s invasion in 2022, the U.S. has provided approximately $60 billion in military aid to Ukraine.
