Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has sharply criticized conservative commentator Tucker Carlson for his interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a statement reported by the Daily Mail, Johnson described the interview as “ludicrous” and a “tissue of lies,” emphasizing that Putin is “doomed to failure” in Ukraine, contrary to any portrayal of inevitability of success.
Carlson, who previously worked for Fox News and has since started his own media company, conducted the interview on X, marking a rare occasion where Putin has spoken to Western media since the invasion of Ukraine. Johnson accused Carlson of “fawning” and displaying “slack-jawed happiness” during the interview, failing to challenge Putin on the brutal tactics used against Ukrainian civilians.
The former Prime Minister lambasted Carlson for acting like a fan rather than a journalist, accusing him of spreading Putin’s misleading narratives without scrutiny. He compared Carlson’s behavior to George Galloway’s infamous praise of Saddam Hussein, calling Carlson a conduit for Putin’s propaganda in the United States.
Johnson’s critique extended to the content of the interview, where Putin expressed openness to negotiations with the U.S. while justifying his actions in Ukraine. He lamented the missed opportunity to highlight Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s efforts against Russian aggression.
Johnson concluded by addressing U.S. Congress members who are hesitant to support Ukraine, urging them to recognize their role and responsibilities in the face of the conflict.
