A routine Senate session Tuesday exposed tensions within the Democratic Party over how to respond to Donald Trump. During debate on bipartisan police funding legislation, Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) interrupted proceedings with a forceful critique of his party’s posture toward the former president.

Booker objected to a bill package led by Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), offering an amendment he said would give New Jersey more access to police grants. He argued the legislation could reinforce Trump’s political agenda. “This is the problem with Democrats in America right now,” Booker said. “We are being complicit to Donald Trump.”

The objection triggered pushback from Cortez Masto and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who said the bills had cleared committee weeks ago with unanimous support. Klobuchar also noted Booker’s prior absence from key hearings.

Booker defended his stance as a necessary wake-up call. “If we don’t stand up as Democrats, we deserve to lose,” he said. Despite withdrawing his objection and allowing the bills to pass, Booker declared, “It’s time for us to fight.”
