WASHINGTON, D.C. — FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino on Thursday downplayed his previous suggestions of a cover-up in the Jan. 6 pipe bomb investigation, telling Fox News’s Sean Hannity that earlier claims were made when he “was paid… for [his] opinions” as a political commentator. Bongino said the FBI is now “pretty comfortable we have our guy,” following the arrest of 30-year-old Brian Cole of Woodbridge, Virginia.
Cole was charged with transporting an explosive device across state lines and attempting malicious destruction using explosive materials. Investigators say he concealed his identity with a hood and large face mask, which allowed him to evade arrest for nearly five years. His apprehension closes one of the few remaining open questions surrounding the events leading up to the Jan. 6 attack.
Bongino previously claimed on his podcast that the FBI already knew the suspect’s identity and was withholding it because the case was “an inside job.” On Thursday, however, he emphasized that as a federal official, his work is now “guided by facts.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel said no new witness tips led to Cole’s arrest, crediting teams that “re-examined every piece of evidence” after what they described as years of stalled progress under the prior administration. Bondi said diligent investigative work—not new information—allowed officials to bring the case forward.
The FBI had faced bipartisan criticism for years over the unresolved bombing attempt, offering substantial rewards for information before the breakthrough.
