Attorney General Pam Bondi suggested Tuesday that Chicago is unlikely to be the next city placed under federal control as part of President Donald Trump’s crime crackdown. She cited opposition from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who have denounced the idea of allowing troops and federal agents into the city.
“They are a progressive city, and they don’t want the president’s help. That’s on them,” Bondi said on Fox News. “Chicago should be begging Donald Trump for help to keep Chicago safe — yet they aren’t. So we’re going to a city who wants us there.”
Trump indicated an announcement could come as soon as Wednesday, hinting at coordination with another state’s governor and mayor. He previously floated New Orleans as a possible site, noting that Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry welcomed federal assistance.
Even as a federal takeover in Chicago appears unlikely, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has launched “Operation Midway Blitz” in the city, targeting undocumented immigrants. The campaign, announced Monday, was named after Katie Abraham, a 20-year-old killed earlier this year in a crash involving a Guatemalan national living illegally in the U.S.
Bondi has also pursued legal challenges against Chicago’s sanctuary policies, though a lawsuit filed in February was dismissed in July.
