Attorney General Pam Bondi on Tuesday called a five-state drug bust “the largest fentanyl bust in our nation’s history,” with 11.5 kilos of fentanyl recovered, including 3 million pills disguised as oxycodone. The multi-agency operation also seized methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and 49 firearms. At least six arrestees were undocumented, and the operation targeted individuals tied to the Mexican Sinaloa cartel, which Trump has labeled a foreign terrorist organization.
Bondi said the suspects will serve prison time in the U.S., arguing against deportation due to the risk of recidivism. The alleged ringleader, Heriberto Salazar Amaya, was arrested in Oregon.
DEA official Rob Murphy praised the coordinated effort and said more arrests are likely. Trump, who has prioritized the fentanyl crisis and anti-cartel policies in his second term, reiterated that cartels are trying to “destroy our country.”
The bust follows criticism of Bondi’s exaggerated claim that fentanyl seizures had saved 258 million lives — a figure debunked by fact-checkers as vastly overstated.
