Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Friday that she is revoking a Biden administration policy that limited the Department of Justice from seeking records and testimony from journalists during leak investigations.

The previous policy, issued by former Attorney General Merrick Garland, largely prohibited the DOJ from obtaining journalists’ communications except under rare circumstances. Bondi criticized the approach as having been “abused” to protect politically motivated leaks.

In a memo to DOJ staff, Bondi stated the department will now treat investigative actions against members of the press as an “extraordinary measure,” but one that can be used when necessary. She emphasized that intentional leaking “undermines” the rule of law and must be stopped.

The move follows recent referrals for prosecution by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard targeting suspected media leakers, and comes amid ongoing internal leak concerns within the new Trump administration.

This is Trump covering his ass and putting pressure on journalists not to expose the administration’s illegal activities.
