Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly fired multiple Department of Justice employees this week with ties to former special counsel Jack Smith, who led investigations into Donald Trump over classified documents and the 2020 election. According to reports from The New York Times, Axios, and Reuters, between 9 and 20 employees were terminated on Friday.
Those let go reportedly include two prosecutors who worked directly under Smith, along with U.S. marshals, attorneys, and support staff. The purge appears tied to a broader review by the DOJ’s “Weaponization Working Group,” formed to reassess past probes involving Trump.
Smith dismissed both major cases in late 2024, citing DOJ policy against prosecuting a sitting president. He resigned at the end of the Biden administration. Earlier this year, Bondi’s DOJ also fired a dozen prosecutors linked to the prior investigations.
Critics say the firings breach long-standing norms separating the White House from DOJ operations. “The rules don’t exist anymore,” said Patty Hartman, a fired DOJ public affairs official. “There used to be a line … That line is very definitely gone.”
The DOJ has not issued an official comment.
