Springfield, Ohio, City Hall was evacuated on Thursday following a bomb threat. The threat came as the city gained national attention due to false claims about immigrants eating pets, which have been promoted by figures like former President Trump and Ohio Senator JD Vance. In a Facebook post, the city government confirmed the evacuation and said local and regional law enforcement are investigating the threat.
The allegations about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield have been widely shared, despite city officials denying any such incidents. During a recent debate, Trump referred to these claims, saying, “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs.”
The city’s Facebook post stated that authorities were alerted to the threat through an email sent at 8:24 a.m., and they urged the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
The city has been a focus of national attention since a pro-Nazi march on August 10 and a subsequent City Commission meeting. At the meeting, a speaker who identified with the neo-Nazi group Blood Tribe was removed by Mayor Rob Rue after making threatening statements about immigration.
City officials continue to dismiss the baseless claims, and law enforcement is managing the ongoing situation.
