Federal agents seized classified materials from former National Security Adviser John Bolton’s office and home during raids in late August, according to newly filed court documents.

The FBI recovered files marked “confidential,” “secret,” and related to weapons of mass destruction, U.S. strategic communications, and the U.S. mission to the United Nations, Politico reported. Other seized items included travel records and documents labeled “Trump.”

An affidavit reviewed by Axios alleged Bolton used a private email account hacked by a “foreign entity” to share classified information. Agents confiscated computers, hard drives, and additional records during the search of his Maryland residence.

The Justice Department is investigating potential violations of three statutes: Section 793 of Title 18 (the Espionage Act), covering unauthorized retention or transmission of defense information; and Section 1924, which prohibits unauthorized removal of classified materials.

Bolton, a frequent critic of Donald Trump since leaving his post in 2019, previously published The Room Where It Happened, a memoir that sparked disputes over classified content.
