DENVER, CO — Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) is facing widespread criticism after photos surfaced of her Halloween costume depicting Mexican stereotypes and referencing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The images, posted Friday on X, showed Boebert wearing a sombrero and traditional Mexican-style dress while holding a sign that read, “Mexican Word of the Day: JUICY Tell me if… Juicy ICE coming.”
In the photos, Boebert is smiling alongside a man dressed as an ICE officer — identified by ABC News as her boyfriend, Kyle Pearcy. The post quickly went viral, drawing tens of thousands of reactions and heated debate across social media. Critics accused Boebert of mocking immigrants amid ongoing ICE detentions in Colorado.
State Sen. Julie Gonzales, co-chair of the Colorado Democratic Latino Caucus, condemned the costume, saying, “Congresswoman Boebert chose to mock our community and co-opt our culture while immigrant Coloradans are being detained.”
Boebert dismissed the criticism in a statement to Nexstar’s KDVR, saying, “It’s a Halloween costume. Tell our Senators to vote for the CR and open the government. They are choosing to let millions of American families suffer.”
The controversy comes as Boebert serves her third term in Congress and first representing Colorado’s 4th District.
