Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) and a group of Colorado Republicans have launched a threat of a recall effort against Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold (D) following a Supreme Court decision. The Court’s ruling blocked Griswold’s attempt to remove former President Donald Trump from the primary ballot based on the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause. This clause was invoked due to Trump’s involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots, but the Supreme Court determined states do not have the authority to disqualify candidates in this manner.

Boebert and the Colorado GOP have expressed strong criticism towards Griswold, accusing her of abusing her office for political reasons. They argue that her actions aimed to interfere with the election process, thereby undermining the democratic principle of allowing citizens to make their voices heard. This group, including Colorado Republican Party Chair Dave Wiliams and other party officials, described the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision as an embarrassment to both Coloradans and Americans at large.

The logistics of the recall effort against Griswold would require gathering 621,000 signatures as mandated by state law. While it remains unclear if Boebert and her colleagues will initiate a petition, Boebert has already linked to a petition on her campaign website, which redirects to a fundraising platform. Griswold has publicly expressed her disappointment with the Supreme Court’s ruling, emphasizing her belief that individuals who have broken their oath through acts of insurrection should not be eligible for election ballots. In contrast, former President Trump celebrated the ruling as a significant victory.
