The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) has condemned recent remarks by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who accused Democrats of “worshiping” George Floyd, the Black man murdered by a white police officer in 2020. Greene’s comments came after a House subcommittee hearing on COVID-19 origins, where she criticized Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) for allegedly accusing Republicans of “worshiping” Donald Trump.

In response to a reporter noting Trump’s recent conviction, Greene invoked Floyd: “Yeah, so was George Floyd… Democrats worship George Floyd. There were riots burning down the f—ng country over George Floyd.”

Floyd’s murder sparked worldwide protests and calls for police reform, highlighting the disproportionate number of Black Americans killed by police each year. Greene’s additional comments targeted Dr. Anthony Fauci and expressed her frustration with Democratic “antics.”

On social media, Greene emphasized her remarks about Floyd, stating, “I worship God!… Democrats are still worshiping Convicted Felon George Floyd.” This tweet prompted the CBC to respond: “This is unhinged even for @RepMTG. Her actions are unacceptable even by the lowest of Republican standards. George Floyd did not deserve to die, and a member of Congress should have the decency to acknowledge his humanity.”

Floyd died after officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for over nine minutes, during which Floyd repeatedly stated he could not breathe. Chauvin was convicted and sentenced to over 20 years in prison. The CBC marked the fourth anniversary of Floyd’s death by reintroducing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
