SEATTLE, WA — Bill Gates’ latest climate memo is drawing strong reactions from scientists and environmental advocates after he urged global leaders to focus less on emissions targets and more on improving human welfare. The Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist framed the issue as part of his broader mission through the Gates Foundation and Breakthrough Energy.
Gates argued that prioritizing tangible benefits such as poverty reduction, health, and clean water could build public support for long-term sustainability. “I’m a climate activist, but I’m also a child survival activist,” he told CNBC. “If we stop funding all vaccines and that saved you 0.1 degree, would that be a smart tradeoff?”
Some experts praised Gates for highlighting the need to connect climate action to human progress, while others warned his message could weaken momentum for aggressive emissions cuts. “Climate change is not a separate bucket,” said Katharine Hayhoe of The Nature Conservancy. “It’s the hole in every bucket.”
The memo arrives as one of the Atlantic’s strongest storms in history struck Cuba — a stark reminder of the escalating global climate threat.
