Despite their initial opposition to Trump’s immigration policies, including the controversial family separation practice, Democrats argue that their approach to border security also includes creating more legal pathways for immigration.
The strategy seems to resonate with voters, as evidenced by Democrat Tom Suozzi’s victory in a New York special election, where he advocated for increased border security while also supporting a path to citizenship for “Dreamers.” This approach, however, has drawn criticism from immigrant advocates and some within Biden’s party, who see it as a departure from the humane immigration policies Biden once championed. Critics argue that the administration’s willingness to compromise on asylum rules, particularly in negotiations involving aid for Ukraine, betrays the values Biden espoused during his campaign.
Despite these concerns, many Democrats, including those in critical swing states like Nevada, stand behind Biden’s revised stance, emphasizing the need for an orderly process at the border alongside comprehensive immigration reform.
