Outgoing President Joe Biden criticized Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s decision to eliminate fact-checking programs on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, calling it “really shameful” and “contrary to American justice.” Speaking to reporters Friday, Biden emphasized that “telling the truth matters” and warned of the dangers of misinformation reaching millions without scrutiny.
Zuckerberg announced the changes Tuesday, replacing fact-checkers with community notes akin to those used on X (formerly Twitter). He cited the upcoming 2024 presidential election and a renewed focus on “free expression” as reasons for scaling back content moderation.
Biden, reflecting on his presidency, expressed regret over his inability to effectively counter misinformation, particularly from President-elect Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Meta also announced the removal of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team, citing evolving legal and policy landscapes.
Zuckerberg later claimed Meta employees faced intense pressure from the Biden administration over content moderation policies.
