President Biden became the first sitting U.S. president to visit the Amazon rainforest during a stop in Manaus, Brazil, before the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. While there, he signed a proclamation establishing November 17 as International Conservation Day and touted his administration’s climate accomplishments.
Biden emphasized the irreversible progress of the clean energy transition, saying, “Nobody can reverse it,” despite acknowledging that President-elect Trump may attempt to roll back some climate policies.
Biden highlighted achievements including surpassing a $11 billion annual international climate financing goal, cutting carbon emissions, and securing $450 billion in clean energy investments, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs.
The visit drew attention to the ongoing destruction of the Amazon and global failures to meet forest protection pledges, including commitments made at COP26 in 2021. Worsening droughts and wildfires have further stressed the region.
