On Thursday, President Biden called for Americans to trust the integrity of the electoral process following President-elect Trump’s decisive 2024 victory, stating, “It is honest, it is fair and it is transparent. And it can be trusted, win or lose.” Speaking from the Rose Garden, Biden confirmed his commitment to a peaceful transition, assuring Americans he would uphold his constitutional duties. Biden invited Trump to the White House for the transition, which Trump accepted.
Reflecting on his own experience in 2020, when Trump declined to meet or concede, Biden said, “We accept the choice the country made. You can’t love your country only when you win.” He pledged cooperation with Trump’s team for an orderly handover, saying, “That’s what the American people deserve.”
Biden praised Vice President Harris for her campaign efforts, noting her dedication and “great character.” Biden himself had exited the 2024 race in July, endorsing Harris under pressure from Democrats after a challenging debate performance.
In closing, Biden encouraged his team to maximize their remaining time in office, citing achievements like the bipartisan infrastructure law. Urging Democrats to persevere, he said, “A defeat does not mean we are defeated… We’re going to be OK, but we need to stay engaged, we need to keep going. And above all, we need to keep the faith.”
