Former President Joe Biden sharply criticized the Trump administration’s approach to Social Security during a Tuesday address to disability advocates in Chicago. Speaking publicly for the first time since leaving office in January, Biden warned that Trump’s policies are putting Social Security in peril.
Without naming Trump directly, Biden referred to the current president as “this guy,” saying that “in fewer than 100 days, this new administration has made so much … damage and so much destruction.”
Biden denounced remarks made by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Elon Musk, who has overseen staffing cuts at the Social Security Administration and previously called the program a “Ponzi scheme.” Biden emphasized that Americans “earn these benefits” and called the administration’s rhetoric “detached from the average American.”
White House spokesman Steven Cheung responded by attacking Biden’s mental fitness, stating Trump has promised to protect and even expand Social Security by eliminating taxes on benefits.
Biden’s remarks were delivered at a conference for Advocates, Counselors and Representatives for the Disabled and focused on defending Social Security amid the Trump administration’s proposed agency overhauls.
