In a new interview with The New York Times, former President Joe Biden defended his clemency record, asserting that he “consciously” made all strategic decisions regarding the more than 4,000 pardons and commutations issued during his presidency — including high-profile figures like his son Hunter Biden, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and retired General Mark Milley.
The remarks come as the House Oversight Committee investigates Biden’s use of an autopen to sign clemency documents and whether key aides concealed signs of cognitive decline. While Biden confirmed the use of the autopen, he emphasized its legality and necessity, stating, “There were a lot [of decisions].”
Though Biden claimed full responsibility for setting the strategy and standards behind the decisions, he admitted he did not personally review each name — particularly in group cases, such as pandemic-era home confinement commutations. “They aren’t reading names off,” Biden said, except for prominent individuals.
The Oversight Committee plans to question several former Biden aides in the coming weeks, including Ron Klain and Steve Ricchetti. Biden dismissed the investigation as politically motivated, calling Trump and House Republicans “liars” trying to “change the focus.”
