In his final hours in office, President Joe Biden issued a series of pardons Monday, preemptively protecting individuals threatened with prosecution by President-elect Donald Trump. Among those pardoned were former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley, Dr. Anthony Fauci, members of the Jan. 6 committee, and Capitol and D.C. police officers who testified about the 2021 Capitol attack.

Biden emphasized the pardons were not admissions of guilt, stating the individuals acted honorably. Milley was lauded for decades of military service, while Fauci was credited for managing public health crises, including COVID-19. Jan. 6 committee members, including Rep. Bennie Thompson and former Rep. Liz Cheney, were praised for their efforts to investigate the attack.

Biden condemned politically motivated threats and investigations, calling them damaging to reputations and finances, and said these public servants deserved protection from unjust prosecutions.
