President Joe Biden has committed to using new emergency powers to halt border crossings if overwhelmed, contingent on the passage of a new bipartisan immigration bill. During a statement on Friday, Biden endorsed a Senate immigration deal, which faces opposition from former President Donald Trump. Biden described the proposed reforms as the “toughest and fairest” for securing U.S. borders, granting him authority to close the border in emergency situations. He emphasized his readiness to use this authority immediately upon the bill’s enactment.

Biden’s endorsement comes amid his acknowledgment of the border’s inefficiencies, stating the need for urgent repair. He views the securing of the border through this deal as a victory for America, appealing to those demanding stricter border control. His statement aligns with his recent optimism about reaching a bipartisan agreement.

This coincides with Republicans, particularly in the House, linking their support for Ukraine aid to stricter immigration policies. The Biden administration had previously requested additional funding, tying border funding to aid for Ukraine and Israel. Senate negotiators have intensified discussions on these matters, despite Trump urging Republicans to reject any bipartisan border deal.

In related news, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported record-breaking undocumented migrant encounters in December, surpassing 300,000, mainly at the southwest border. However, there was over a 50% reduction in border encounters in the first half of January.
