President Biden has a substantial lead over former President Trump among voters under 30, according to a CBS News/YouGov poll. The poll found that 61% of likely voters under 30 support Biden, while 38% back Trump. Young voters are more likely to prioritize issues like abortion, climate change, and race and diversity than those over 30.
Among young voters, 57% said abortion is a major factor in their vote, 54% selected climate change, and 52% chose race and diversity. In contrast, half of voters over 30 cited abortion, 37% mentioned climate change, and 36% pointed to race and diversity.
Additionally, 72% of young voters approve of Biden’s student loan cancellation. However, nearly half of this group believes neither candidate fully understands their needs, with only 26% saying Biden does and 20% saying Trump does.
Voter turnout among young people remains a concern, with only 66% planning to vote in 2024, compared to 94% of those 65 and older.
The poll, conducted from June 17-21 among 2,460 U.S. adults, included 743 respondents aged 18-29. The margin of error for the total sample is 2.8 percentage points and 5.2 percentage points for the 18-29 age group.
Both Biden, 81, and Trump, 78, continue to court young voters amid concerns about their age. An earlier CBS News/YouGov poll showed that half of voters believe Trump has the mental capacity to serve as president, compared to 35% for Biden.
