President Joe Biden’s first interview post-debate did little to quell concerns about his campaign. Despite appearing more energetic with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Biden’s denial of his poor standing and the party’s worries left many Democrats uneasy. David Axelrod, a former Obama campaign strategist, noted Biden’s lack of acknowledgment regarding his future fitness as a concern.
Anonymously speaking, a House Democrat stressed that denial is not a solution. Another operative termed the interview a “stay of execution,” highlighting Biden’s acceptance of potential defeat to Trump. Democratic insiders predict more calls for Biden’s withdrawal when Congress reconvenes. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Sen. Mark Warner are already organizing discussions about Biden’s future.
Despite Biden’s insistence on continuing his campaign, Rep. Mike Quigley and others have urged him to step down to preserve his legacy. Sen. John Fetterman and Rep. Jim Clyburn defended Biden, but widespread skepticism remains about his ability to secure another term.
