President Biden criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to shield presidents from criminal prosecution for official actions, calling it a “dangerous precedent.” “Today’s decision almost certainly means there are virtually no limits on what a president can do,” Biden said at the White House. “It’s a dangerous precedent because the power of the office will no longer be constrained by the law.”

The Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling grants presidents absolute immunity for core responsibilities and presumptive immunity for other official acts. This decision benefits former President Trump in his federal election subversion case.

Biden agreed with Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s dissent, which argued the decision makes the president “a king above the law.” “I dissent. May God bless you all and may God help preserve our democracy,” Biden concluded.
