President Joe Biden announced clemency for nearly 1,500 individuals on Thursday, commuting the sentences of those placed on home confinement during the pandemic under CARES Act rules and fully pardoning 39 individuals convicted of non-violent crimes.
Biden highlighted the importance of addressing sentencing disparities, particularly for non-violent drug offenses, and praised the rehabilitative efforts of those granted clemency. “As President, I have the great privilege of extending mercy to people who have demonstrated remorse and rehabilitation,” Biden said in a statement.
This action builds on earlier clemency measures, including Biden’s 2022 pardons for federal marijuana possession and a 2024 initiative to pardon U.S. veterans convicted under outdated military rules prohibiting gay sex. Biden signaled his intention to review additional clemency petitions in the coming weeks.
