Tyler Cherry, newly promoted to Associate Communications Director in the Biden administration, has issued an apology for controversial tweets from several years ago. Cherry, previously the communications director at the Interior Department, addressed the backlash on Sunday, stating that his past social media posts do not reflect his current views.
The controversy arose after Politico reported Cherry’s promotion, leading to the circulation of tweets from 2014 and 2015 that criticized law enforcement, called for the abolishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and supported anti-Israel organizations. One tweet from 2015 criticized the police system, linking it to “slave patrols and lynch mobs,” while another supported Gaza during the 2014 Gaza War.
Cherry’s tweets have since been deleted, making verification difficult, but the handle in the screenshots matches his current X account. In his apology, Cherry affirmed his support for the Biden administration’s agenda, focusing on climate and environmental policies.
Conservative commentators have criticized Cherry and questioned his suitability for his role. However, the Biden administration has maintained its support, with White House senior deputy press secretary Andrew Bates expressing pride in having Cherry on the team. Cherry’s background includes service under Interior Secretary Deb Haaland and active involvement in LGBTQ rights.
