President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign is courting Republicans dissatisfied with former President Donald Trump. The campaign has appointed Austin Weatherford, former chief of staff to Trump critic and ex-Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger, as the national Republican engagement director. Weatherford’s role focuses on appealing to independents and moderate Republicans who view Trump as a threat if re-elected.

Biden and Trump are closely matched in a potential 2024 rematch, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling. Biden’s support among voters without a four-year degree has decreased by 10 percentage points since 2020, leading to a tied race in most national polls.

Trump frequently labels non-supportive party members as “RINOs” (Republicans in Name Only). The Trump campaign did not respond to requests for comment on this issue. Both campaigns are targeting supporters of former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who exited the Republican primary race in March and has since stated she would vote for Trump. Biden’s campaign is investing heavily in ads aimed at Haley’s voters.

While historically rare for Republicans to back a Democrat in a presidential race, Biden’s team hopes to draw support from those alienated by Trump. Concurrently, Trump is fundraising in liberal-leaning San Francisco, seeking contributions from those disenchanted with Biden’s policies.

The Republican Party has largely rallied around Trump, despite his false claims about winning the 2020 election and the January 6 Capitol riot. Representatives Kinzinger and Liz Cheney, who joined the House committee investigating the January 6 attack, faced party censure for their opposition to Trump.
