President Joe Biden criticized Elon Musk, accusing him of hypocrisy on immigration following a Washington Post report alleging Musk once worked illegally in the U.S. Musk, a South African native, denies the claim.
At a campaign event in Pittsburgh, Biden remarked, “That wealthiest man in the world turned out to be an illegal worker here,” referencing Musk’s alleged violation of his student visa by working instead of attending classes. According to The Washington Post, Musk moved to Palo Alto in 1995 on a student visa for a Stanford program but didn’t enroll, instead launching his startup Zip2. Citing court documents and former associates, the report claims that Zip2 investors pressured Musk to obtain a work visa.
In response, Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter), asserting, “I was in fact allowed to work in the US,” and dismissed Biden’s statement as “The Biden puppet is lying.” The Post reported Musk acknowledged visa challenges in a 2005 email, stating he applied to Stanford as a way to stay legally.
Currently one of the top donors for the Republican Party, Musk has publicly supported Donald Trump, who has reportedly promised him a potential role if elected. Musk’s involvement in the race has included criticism of immigration, aligning with Trump’s platform.
