On Wednesday, President Biden toured storm damage from Hurricane Helene in Asheville, N.C., and received a briefing in Raleigh on relief efforts alongside Gov. Roy Cooper (D). During his visit, Biden criticized those who deny climate change, stating, “No one can deny the impact of climate crisis anymore… they must be brain dead if they do.” He highlighted that warming oceans are fueling stronger storms like Helene.
Biden also announced federal assistance, approving Cooper’s request for six months of full federal coverage for debris removal and protective measures, and confirmed that 1,000 troops will assist in recovery efforts. He called for unity, saying, “There are no Democrats or Republicans, there are only Americans” in times of disaster.
Vice President Kamala Harris visited Georgia the same day to assess storm damage and announced similar federal support for Gov. Brian Kemp’s (R) recovery efforts.
Former President Trump, who visited Georgia earlier, criticized Biden’s hurricane response, though his claim that Kemp had trouble reaching Biden was false. Biden is scheduled to visit Georgia and Florida, while Harris will soon visit North Carolina.
