President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will participate in the first of two presidential debates on June 27, with new rules allowing moderators to mute microphones during the debate. The 90-minute debate will include two commercial breaks, during which campaign staff will not interact with the candidates. Candidates are permitted to use a pen, pad of paper, and bottle of water but cannot bring prewritten notes or props.
Historically, microphones remained on during debates until 2020, when the Commission on Presidential Debates first allowed moderators to mute mics. The Biden and Trump campaigns, along with CNN and ABC News, have formalized agreements for two debates, breaking from the traditional Commission on Presidential Debates format.
Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. may join if he meets the criteria of 15% in four national polls and sufficient ballot access for 270 Electoral College votes. Kennedy has met the polling requirement in three national polls and claims enough ballot access to win 304 Electoral College votes by June 27.
For the first time since 1984, leading candidates will debate outside the Commission on Presidential Debates, with CNN and ABC News organizing the events. A vice presidential debate will be hosted by CBS News.
