President Biden and leading Democrats condemned protests at a Los Angeles synagogue on Sunday, calling them antisemitic. Protesters, opposing the Israel-Hamas war and U.S. policy towards Israel, gathered outside Adas Torah, where organizers were promoting Israeli real estate in “housing projects in all the best Anglo neighborhoods in Israel.”
“Intimidating Jewish congregants is dangerous, unconscionable, antisemitic, and un-American,” Biden said on social media Monday. “Americans have a right to peaceful protest. But blocking access to a house of worship — and engaging in violence — is never acceptable.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom also denounced the protests.
Protest group CodePink rejected Biden’s characterization as “lies,” stating the protest targeted the real estate sale, not the synagogue. They argued, “This rhetoric is reminiscent of the McCarthy-era smears used to discredit and, at times, deport activists for peace & civil rights.”
The event’s real estate offerings’ status regarding disputed West Bank land was unclear.
CodePink accused Biden of fueling Islamophobia, highlighting a recent attack on a Palestinian-American girl in Texas. Biden condemned the Texas attack hours after CodePink’s statement.
