Steve Bannon, former adviser to President-elect Trump, criticized Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, blaming him for former Rep. Matt Gaetz’s decision to withdraw from consideration to lead the Justice Department. In an interview with The Dispatch, Bannon called McConnell “anti-populist” and accused him of aligning with establishment Republicans to undermine Trump’s nominees.
Bannon urged the GOP to adopt a more aggressive stance to ensure key appointments, warning that establishment Republicans cater to the donor class and could oppose Trump’s agenda. He advocated for challenging dissenters in upcoming elections, saying, “If you don’t stand tall and support President Trump’s candidates, you’re going to be primaried.”
Gaetz, under scrutiny for past investigations into alleged misconduct, said his withdrawal aimed to avoid distracting from other nominees. Bannon described the move as a “casualty” for the Trump administration. Trump has since nominated former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to the role.
Gaetz, who recently won reelection, announced he will not return to Congress in the next session.
