Former President Donald Trump is facing criticism for allegedly making a racist remark about the funeral cost of murdered soldier Vanessa Guillén. The Atlantic reported that Trump, when informed the funeral would cost $60,000, allegedly said, “It doesn’t cost 60,000 bucks to bury a f—ing Mexican.” Trump’s team denied the claim, and Guillén’s sister, Mayra, defended him, stating he had shown respect to the family and that she voted for Trump.
Vanessa Guillén was murdered by a fellow soldier in 2020, sparking calls for military reform. Some Latinos view Trump’s comment as part of a history of racism toward Mexican Americans in the military.
In a recent NBC News poll, about 40% of registered Hispanic voters supported Trump, while 54% supported Vice President Kamala Harris, and 6% were unsure or said they would not vote. His support from conservative Hispanics, like Mayra Guillén, highlights the political divide within the Latino community.
