David Axelrod, former adviser to President Obama, argued that Sen. JD Vance’s (R-Ohio) response to the attempted assassination of former President Trump should disqualify him as a vice presidential candidate.
“If @JDVance1 is on the short list for VP, this Tweet, sent an hour after the assassination attempt in PA, ought to disqualify him in the eyes of the Trump campaign,” Axelrod posted on X, sharing Vance’s statement.
Vance, a potential VP pick for Trump, claimed on social media that the shooting was not isolated and partially blamed President Biden’s campaign. He wrote, “The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”
Axelrod criticized Vance’s response, saying it showed the “wrong vibe in that moment,” and suggested Trump might not want a polarizing running mate. “As we now are learning, the gunman’s profile doesn’t seem to match Vance’s premise. But at least wait and see!” Axelrod added.
The incident, labeled as an assassination attempt, occurred at a Trump rally in Butler, Pa., wounding Trump. Both parties have urged unity as the FBI investigates the suspect’s motives.
