The Autism Society of America is pushing back against Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. after he pledged Thursday to identify the cause of autism spectrum disorder by September through a “massive testing and research effort.”

Calling the timeline “unrealistic and misleading,” Autism Society CEO Christopher Banks and Chief Marketing Officer Kristyn Roth warned that the lack of transparency and potential use of discredited theories could undermine decades of scientific progress. They emphasized that autism is a complex condition influenced by genetic, biological, and environmental factors—not vaccines, as Kennedy has falsely claimed in the past.

“The disability community, global scientific and medical community are all aligned that there is no direct link between vaccines and autism,” Roth said, citing decades of peer-reviewed research.

The Autism Society also criticized Kennedy’s use of terms like “epidemic,” saying it perpetuates stigma. They expressed concern that rushed and unsupported claims give false hope and detract from meaningful autism research and care.
