At least a dozen House Republicans are considering support for Rep. Don Bacon’s (R-Neb.) bill aimed at limiting the White House from imposing tariffs unilaterally, according to Axios. The bill would require presidential tariffs to expire after 60 days unless Congress approves them and would allow Congress to eliminate them through disapproval resolutions.
Reps. Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.), Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.), and two Democrats have signed on as co-sponsors. Bacon said 10 additional Republicans may join after consulting the U.S. Trade Representative. A similar bill in the Senate is backed by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.).
The proposal marks a notable split with Trump, who has threatened a veto. One GOP lawmaker, requesting anonymity, said while Trump’s tariffs have had some benefits, they have also hurt farmers in their district.
Bacon does not plan to rush the bill but said it could gain traction if economic conditions worsen, hinting at a possible discharge petition to force a vote.
