Police arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in connection to the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City. While not officially charged for the shooting, Mangione is considered a strong person of interest. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed his arrest at a McDonald’s after being identified by an employee. He was found carrying a gun with a silencer, a fraudulent ID, and clothing linked to the incident.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Mangione will face local gun charges, and extradition discussions are underway. A “ghost gun,” potentially made with a 3D printer, and a handwritten manifesto were recovered. The manifesto reportedly expressed hostility toward corporate America but did not name Thompson or UnitedHealthcare.
Thompson was fatally shot on December 4 outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel while heading to an investor meeting. The assailant fled into Central Park, leaving behind DNA evidence and a backpack. Authorities believe the suspect used a fake ID to stay in the city.
The FBI offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. UnitedHealth Group expressed gratitude to law enforcement and called for privacy for Thompson’s family during their mourning.
