Senator Kyrsten Sinema has affirmed her commitment to remaining an independent during a pre-taped interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday. Despite facing opposition from both the left and right as she considers a 2024 reelection bid, Sinema remains steadfast in her decision to leave party affiliations behind.

“Now that you’re an independent, you’ll never become a Republican?” host Margaret Brennan asked. “No,” Sinema responded, “You don’t go from one broken party to another.”

Although Sinema has not yet confirmed whether she plans to run for reelection in 2024, she will face challenges from both sides if she does. Democratic Representative Ruben Gallego and Republican Sheriff of Pinal County, Mark Lamb, have both expressed interest in running against her.

Despite the potential challenges, Sinema has used her newfound independence to call for an end to partisanship in Congress. “I would suggest that what I tried to do in the United States Senate right is to show that we have differences, differences which should be celebrated,” she said. “That’s an important part of a democracy. But those differences shouldn’t stop us from getting things done.”

In her interview, Sinema emphasized her belief that party affiliations should not prevent elected officials from working together to achieve results. “I’m not here to talk about elections today,” she said when pressed about her plans for 2024. “Those differences shouldn’t stop us from getting things done.”
